I was shooting my friend Nick on the beach the other day, and another friend named Kinsey comes by. She asked if she could try out the camera, so I say "Of course!" and show her how to focus, expose correctly, etc. Within one minute she makes this picture, which was the best of the day.

Kinsey is awesome. I might just give up the photo thing and be her full-time assistant instead.

The Guardian Newspaper recently interviewed grizzly Vogue photographer David Bailey. They asked him " Who's really good and who's mediocre? "

Mr.Bailey answered "Oh I don't know. But most photographers just take pictures. They just come and go "click" – anyone can do that. Which is great – the more people that do that the better it is for me. If I take a picture, I know the person. I use plate cameras most of the time, so they're not looking at cameras, they're looking at me. I don't say "laugh". If I want them to laugh, I make them laugh. If I want them to be grumpy, I'll probably be rude to them."

I was thinking that I should stop posting so many links on my blog, and concentrate instead on just my own work. But that went out the window when I saw these pictures. Once again: wow!

A little search engine investigating revealed Mr.Mollison's group portraits of music fans dressed in their best clobber. Also not bad at all. Talented bloke is this Mollison.

David Hockney is famous for his paintings, but his photo-montages also deserve attention. I try to think of the camera as a tool for making marks on a page in the same way as a pencil or a paintbrush, and these 'Joiners' are good examples of this theory in practice. 'Kasmin, Los Angeles, 28th March 1982' and 'My Mother, Bolton Abbey, Nov.82 No.4' show a strikingly cubist approach to the photographic portrait

(I'm not sure if anybody reads this except me, but at least this is a good scrapbook for my ideas.)

When I tell people that I'm a photographer they sometimes say 'Oh, like a Paparazzi right?'.

On the guardian website I found this nice gallery about pioneering Paparazzo Ron Gallela whose photographs from the 50s are seen as a great document of historical Hollywood. I think that it's clear from the expressions of his subjects' faces how they felt about him.

Lifetime membership of the Students Union

I was recently awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership of the Coventry University Students' Union in recognition of my contribution to the Source Newspaper over the past two years.

As a photojournalist I covered all kinds of news and entertainment events, gaining a huge amount of practical experience in the process. It was a real boost to see my work in print every month too. The certificate is a great souvenir of my time with the Source so many thanks to president Tom Wood, editor Rich Hayward and former editor Jack Lowman.

YouTube Debut

I have just uploaded my first ever YouTube video, if you follow the link at the bottom you can give it a watch. Although not truly a photographic project, the amount of stop motion photography involved really pushed my technical knowledge and it goes to show what you can achieve with a camera and a little application.

'Photocopied' tells the story of a man who must escape from an office using only a photocopier and his wits. I created it for my final Animation module at Coventry University. It took around 300 sheets of individually printed A3 paper and a lot of patience, but I'm really pleased with the results. Let me know what you reckon.

Sunsets, chainlink fences and crows

Whilst cycling along one day I spotted these strong compositional elements...ahem...I mean this beautiful sunset. Bish bosh bash, some nice pictures of crows and fences. I'm interested in the way that changing the image to black and white completely changes the story of the lone crow - the image can be optimistic or pessemistic, depending on the technical choices that I made. This is a great example of how the camera is a tool to be used just like a pen or a brush - you can say anything you want with it.

Royal Engineers Monument for the PQST

This week I travelled to Carver Barracks in Wimbish to photograph the memorial of the 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordanance Disposal) for the sculptors at the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust. I first started taking photographs when I was just a nipper, to document my travels to interesting places, and it is very satisfying that I can continue to do this but now in a professional capacity. Thanks to Hannah at the PSQT and Kirk and Andrew at Wimbish.

Digital SLR Photography magazine is running a monthly competition, and the theme for March is 'Food'. I wanted to think laterally and avoid the hyper-realistic still life that is commonly associated with food advertising, so I headed down to the market to look for something a bit more immediate. I like the results, but I wish that I had a bit more time in that amazing meat freezer! My problem now is that i can only submit one... choices, choices.

Super Saturated Student Shenanigans

The latest round of photographs from the Students' Union bar and club have gone online. This time I tried to incorporate the classic club portraits with some more interesting 'Nightlife' (see previous post) style crowd images. Take a look at the online gallery and tell me what you think.

It seems that the SU have boosted the saturation on top of my alterations. It's no wonder that they are looking so neon!

The February issue of the Students' Union newspaper has been published and you will see my photos on the front cover, on the back cover and in between too! The main event I covered this month was custard wrestling at the SU bar (I'm not kidding...they tried to get me to take part too) so if you're into pudding related sports then pick up a free copy anywhere on campus.

Not only that but I also had two full colour illustrations printed and I even reviewed a play for the newspaper too! Phew. I've already been put on assignment for the March edition so keep an eye on the blog and you'll see the best pics soon.

First roll from the Viv'

I got the first roll of pictures back from my Vivitar 'Ultra Wide and Slim' plastic camera and here are the best of them, uncropped. The Viv' is essentially a disposable camera that you can reload, and it costs less for the camera than it does to have the film developed! (check out the going rate on eBay). This roll is my first foray into the world of lo-fi photography and makes quite an interesting change from using high-end dSLRs.

From what I see in these prints I think that to get the best results I need to shoot in bright daylight - unfortunately being England in February it will be a while before there's much of that around. I've loaded up a colour film for my next roll and I'll probably be concentrating on portraits next- apologies in advance to my friends and family! Keep an eye out and you will see the results here soon.

Nightlife

Recently when i have gone out with friends i have taken a small camera along too. Some tinkering with the options has allowed me to get some really interesting results. I love the multiple exposures, light trails, bright smudges and abstract compositions. Not only are the images fascinating to look at, but they give a great impression of the environment and atmosphere in which they were taken.

These pictures are probably some of the more artistic i have taken, moving away from traditional documentary and into something more experimental. I will continue to keep my camera handy when i venture out to the pub, and when I have a good collection of images I will think about how to present them. It might even be worth seeing if small galleries might want to exhibit them (maybe my imagination is running away with itself?). The main thing is that i have fun taking them!

Making Ikea Abstract

This month i was asked by The Source newspaper to photograph Ikea for a forthcoming article. Now everyone knows what the Swedish flatpack merchants look like, so i tried to be a little more abstract in my portrayal. I'm quite pleased with the results, I hope that the Editor agrees!

New Year, New Cameras

Over the Christmas holidays i have been inspired by photographers like Nic Nichols and my colleague Ed Ryder to explore the world of low-fi photography. Returning to film and using old equipment will hopefully lead to some interesting, unpredictable results.

I was given an old soviet Zenit-E by my housemate Amy, bought a Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim from eBay (check out the flickr group) and, most excitingly, found my Grandfather's Kodak No.1 Junior Pocket camera buried in a drawer in my house.

After doing a little online research it turns out that this Kodak camera is at least 75 years old! Mike Butkus has an extensive online archive of vintage camera instruction manuals which was very helpful. Unfortunately the bellows have worn out at the corners, so before i use it i will have to do some extensive tape repairs (if you look in the picture you may be able to see where i have started taping) but as far as i can tell the shutter is still functioning perfectly. It takes medium format film, which will be a first for me also.

So all in all an exciting photographic start to the year, I can't wait to get out and start taking pictures! When i get my first rolls back i will be sure to post the best of them here.
